Support to Hospital in hills of Eastern Nepal
Nepal, high in the Himalayas, home of Mt Everest and with an ‘exotic’ capital, Katmandu, has a turbulent recent history and a desperate need for improved medical care. Rotary Club of Grand Island, N.Y., working with Himalayan Health Care, a US based NGO, and with support from other neighboring Rotary Clubs and District 7090, provided partial funding for a hospital at Ilam. (photo of hospital) Our awareness was raised by a Grand Island Rotary Member, Dr. Dave Johnson, who had seen the site and its needs. Assurance that people in Ilam would support the project.

In addition to having a Nepal Rotary Club involved, erased any misgivings about our financial support. The project began with initial financing in 2003, hospital dedication in 2004 and additional support from Rotary Club of Grand Island, N.Y. and Rotary International to build a simple waste water treatment system and provide electric power backup in 2007.
The 24 bed hospital served over 12,000 patients in 2007 and provided for safe, clean, delivery of over 200 babies in that year. (picture of bed with quilts)
Building wells and Bridge in rural Ethiopia
Rotary Club of Grand Island is raising funds in conjunction with area Clubs, Rotary District 7090 and other organizations to have wells and a bridge built in rural Ethiopia, all in conjunction with the Finot Rotary Club (an Addis Ababa suburb)and the Ethiopia Anti-Malaria Association. Many small communities in rural Ethiopia have no clean water supply and no direct access to the developed towns, particularly during the rainy season.

Providing funds for equipment and supplies on these projects, but insisting the local community provide labor for actual construction, insures that they will maintain and appreciate the project. Ethiopians must also train the locals on the need / benefits of using the clean water once it is available. ‘Do-good’ projects just dropped on a traditional community do not succeed until there is local education on their benefits.
It is this involvement with local Rotary Clubs that has made so many Rotary International programs successful around the world.
